Change Your Mind, Powerfully

Recently, I went to a workshop given by Pamela Bruner. She's originally known as being a master at the harp, but she is also a coach for service professionals. The focus of the workshop was money -- something most artists and creatives always want more of. Even though I'm pretty savvy when it comes to mind/body connections and energy work (I'm a Reiki master and an Ashtanga yoga teacher), Pamela introduced me to EFT.

What is EFT?
The acronym is for Emotional Freedom Techniques. Apparently, it is used for treating soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder and the rest of us with our morass of personal challenges and blocks. In the workshop, we used it to treat our emotional blocks to receiving money.

How Does it Work?
It involves vocal acknowledgement of an emotional issue, ranking of the level of anxiety the issue produces on a 0-10 scale, and tapping along your meridians as you state the problem, what you believe. Later, once anxiety is below a level 5, what you're willing to accept as your new truth. I used it this morning in regard to some sciatic pain that has recently developed, shortly after a medical practicioner treated a minor injury and said, "You must also have terrbile sciatic pain too." I said, "Actually, I never have," but sure enough, in a matter of days, I manifested the pain. I can say, after a few minutes of EFT this morning, the pain is gone.

You Can Do it!
Please visit her site to watch a video of her teaching the basics of EFT in a workshop. Give it a try, but understand, some emotional issues may be too intense to just work to a zero or one level in a session, especially when done by a newbie with no coach or trained professional to assist you. Still, I believe it was worth the price of the workshop just to learn this technique.

Oh, and if you reach out to Pamela, tell her Mel Edwards sent you!

Hey Trek, Pick Me!

Trek (the bike company) is looking for a few good women bloggers...who ride. This morning I submitted my entry about why I love to ride and why they should select me. I hope you have fun reading my entry. I had a giggle or two writing it.

WOO HOO!

As a girl, I rode every day of my life -- for fun, to go see friends, recreation -- and the sheer trill of coasting down a hill yelling, you got it, “Wooo hooo!” As an adult, I have barely used a bike at all because I find it difficult to find a place to ride that is safe and away from highways, or a bike that is WSD and small enough for my 5’ tall body. This year, I've decided to return to my roots because I was healthier, happier and life was simpler in my hometown. These days, I ride for the fun of it, the physical activity and to reacquaint myself with a natural pace. (Let’s face it, multi-tasking only makes me a harried, grumpy girl!)

My Commitment to Ride
I sold my truck (my husband and I now share a Toyota Yaris if a car is necessary) and I am getting a bike that fits my stature. Currently, we have a bike trail located a few miles from our current home that is safe to ride but hard to get to without being hit by a car. (No death wish here.) As a result, we plan to move to my childhood hometown (Glens Falls, NY) early this summer so we can live in a place where bikes are used regularly: bike lanes on almost all of the roads, and a bike trail that leads to Lake George village (9 miles from our home there to the lake).

My Commitment to Others
I believe that I have a moral obligation to share my learning and expertise with others. I’m a teacher and hold a master’s degree in storytelling, and am a blogger already. My primary blog is www.votrevray.blogspot.com, and focuses upon people living their “truth” or truest life path that honors who they are. I believe these combination of skills make my writing suited to teach others in an entertaining way. I don’t hold back. If my butt hurts after a ride folks will know it -- on the blog, my Facebook friends and I’ll Tweet about it too. I’d love to help encourage other curvy girls to get their butt in the saddle and give the wheels a whirl again. Together, we’ll have one heck of a year!

Why Pick Mel Edwards?
I'm going to have my bike, be out there riding and writing about it anyway. Why not pick a chick who has the passion and commitment and a big mouth to shout about it? I'll be at BlogHer Conference in Chicago crowing about my work, living in two states (SC and NY) and I'm telling you, it is better to hitch your dreams to my wheels than to build a blogger from scratch.

Making New Friends...and Introductions for YOU!

Every day I am blessed to meet more people. Today I went as a guest to a local networking group and met a handful of people who never heard of me, what I do or the people I have interviewed. Last Friday, when being interviewed as a finalist for the MLK Dream Weekend's Win a Dream contest, I met a half a dozen people who also didn't know me, my dream or the goals of Votre Vray.

What I've Learned Meeting People
It never fails, when I tell people I'm a storyteller who interviews people and shares those interviews, listeners get confused. The first problem is we only hear what we can understand and are interested in. Our minds filter the words and we instantly begin compartmentalizing the information people tell us: who they are, what they do, and if we have any interest in what they're telling us. The second problem is I am not a person who easily fits into a set definition or "box" and people cannot compartmentalize me.

No Box for Me!
I do not want to be in a box. That's why I'm not a public school teacher anymore. I am far more than what that job left me time and energy to be. I think "creative truth teller" sums up what I do well-enough so that those who are intrigued will ask. When they ask, I get to introduce YOU, or other Friends of Votre Vray who have met me. Those who don't ask, because they think I'm too touchy-feely, woo-woo, or crazy to deal with will move past the titls, miss out on meeting some of the most amazing people in the world. They're just not our soul mates. I'm okay with that.

Collapse the Box
Live your life and know, those who don't get you, aren't meant to. Let them be and seek like-minded friends everywhere. Don't forget, you've always got a friend here at Votre Vray!

2009 Update: This Blog, She is a Changin'

I've had a brilliant flash of the obvious. The blogs I love and read the most are less business-formal and more blogger-personal. I just don't think most of my readers really know who I am and what I do on a daily basis and I think that is an enormous mistake.

My Mission To empower people to live the life of their creative dreams (and make a living while doing it) while I do the same.

My Dream Votre Vray means your truth. I strive to learn all that I can about living the creative life running from a day job. (Day jobs: Boo! Hiss!) Then pass on the information.

My Work
  • My primary business and personal focus is information sharing -- teaching people how they can live their creative dreams while using experts in their field as exemplars. I do not pretend to be an expert at anything other than teaching, but everything I learn, I teach.
  • I have TWO blogs that teach - this one & www.schoolroomtoboardroom.com
  • I'm striving to learn all I can about how to have a successful creative person's business and I read dozens of books, interview even more people and watch listen and learn all over the place in social media: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn.
  • I am a storyteller and public speaker who has taken the information I've learned and my experiences and turned them into a one-woman show called "Shout: Kiss My Art."
My Spiritual Side
  • I promote equality, kindness, honoring your spirit and from time to time I'll post things that really tug at my heart. For example, you may have heard of the Richmond Jane Doe who was brutally gang-raped. You can reach out to her here.
  • I'm a Reiki master teacher and a certified Ashtanga yoga teacher, specializing in beginners and primary series practice.
My Gift (and Bad Habits)
  • My greatest skill in life is generating new ideas and enthusiasm. Biggest problem? Finishing what I started because I have more ideas than time or expertise.
  • Oh, and to be honest, I'm a potty mouth and have an Irish temper that cannot be equaled. One step from a berserker, I have to learn calm and patience in this lifetime. I expect if I live as long as the lesson takes, I'll be around another sixty years or so (I'm 40 now).
Personal Life
I'm happily married and have three bunnies. I cannot have kids. (Why must people ask, "Do you have children?") This is sometimes not an issue for me at all but some days, it spurs me to tears. I had a hysterectomy and it saved my life. That said, my mission to help others is made even more serious because I cannot teach my offspring my knowledge. I only have you. Everything I share is all that I know and I give it with love and hope for us all.

Best Indie Artists to Know?

Who are the best business and role models for you art?

I'm looking for names of artists, what their type of art is (performance, fine, applied or literary), what makes them a great model for people to follow.

Here's an example:

Artist: Henry (aka Hank) Rollins
Type(s) of Art: Performance/Spoken Word, band member, indie publisher, actor, poet/writer, etc.
What makes him a great model: This man works harder than any creative person I know. Yes, he speaks his mind, doesn't hold back the swearing/cussing, and admits he screams and can't sing a lick. What I love about him is that he's a good person with strong moral values (believes in "live and let live," doesn't drink or use drugs, hates abuse of power, respects individuality), and he gets a great deal accomplished not only for his career but in support of others whose work may never see the light of day without his help.

So...who do you respect who is a self-made artist/creative and is NOT signed with a major label/publisher etc.? Be sure to list name, type of art, what makes him/her a great model. You can either post a reply here or e-mail me your answer at: MelEdwardsConnect [at] Yahoo.com

I'll be posting a follow-up to this in a month.

Until next time,
keep creating!
-Mel.

Mel's 2009 Horoscope?

I'm always looking for inspiration, so I admit, I do look at horoscopes from time to time. If I like what they say, I pass them along. So, according a link on Yahoo! 2009 looks like a good year for Virgos. Not a Virgo? Don't worry. Check your career (or romantic) horoscope here. Just know, if it is bad news, you can reject it. I LOVE that concept more than any -- carry what serves you, drop what fails you. - Mel. Edwards, founder Votre Vray
Virgo 8/23 – 9/22
Year 2009: Career

You are greatly empowered in your creative endeavors this year, and you emerge like a butterfly from a long sleep in a cocoon! This personal transformation has you sharing wisdom and knowledge your might have never known you possessed. Great potential awaits you as you find new sources of personal strength.

You are feeling very playful, and being creative is the only type of career that will satisfy you. You will be recognized as someone who can totally transform nothing into something ... an alchemist of sorts. The beauty and magnificence that arises from your self-expression feels like a celebration in and of itself. During the summer months, a new contract opportunity may appear; go for it, but make sure you don't take on more than you can handle. You will be paid handsomely for what you do, and you welcome the challenges.

By the fall, career advancement is very possible for you, and with that, greater responsibility. Your far-reaching ideas will be well compensated. Your optimism helps you stay on the bright path, and you can overcome any hurdle. You are learning lessons of faith in your own process, and it's helping you create a positive attitude and harmonious work environment. The world welcomes your positive energy of love and service to others. You see a higher purpose in your work, and this helps you focus on attaining your dreams.

Good-bye 2008, and Thanks for all the Hits!

Dear Friends, Followers and Fans,

I most sincerely thank you for a great 2008!

Together, we can continue to follow our dreams, teach the world about what positive work we do in the universe, and be friends. (How cool is that?)

My first note of thanks goes to Peter Shankman, of HARO, because without HARO I wouldn't have had such wondrous ladies to interview for Votre Vray Creative Women.

Second thank you, but no less significant, I thank each of the ladies who went through the interview process. (See Friends of Votre Vray on the sidebar for a listing of those with websites and blogs.)

Third, and possibly most important of all, I need to thank the readers and followers of Votre Vray blog. Without an audience our work isn't worth much for than tension release of the creative mind.

I fully believe 2009 will be exponentially more fulfilling for the Votre Vray community because we're learning and growing together. Make friends. Play Nice. Spread the word that there's a community focused upon the positive work of amazing creative people...and invite them to Votre Vray. It is all free and will continue as long as I'm alive and kicking.

Happy New Year!

Please, Join Votre Vray Group on Facebook!

This is not a letter I ever intended to write but I’m not sure where to turn to make my vision work the way I know that it can. I’m not dying, homeless, or anything else that might spur someone to action and get them to help me. I’m just a woman who is creative and has spent a majority of my life trying to fit in where I “should” and create a life that others respect instead of living my truth. I have more education than anyone in my family’s history and still owe $19,000 worth of student loans that someday might just get paid off. I have worked in more career paths than I care to count and hated most of them because all along I wasn’t following my dream or using the skills that I know that I have, even if these jobs helped others. The bottom line is now I’m 40 years old and I can’t bare getting up in the morning without acknowledging my truth: I am creative, I like people, I cannot ever have children, and although I have parents who love me and a husband who does too, they’re all I’ve really got in this world and I don’t want to die with my soul still aching to make a real difference in lives of others. I am not powerful or wealthy enough to end world hunger or disease or make the impact that Bill and Melinda Gates can. However, I am a storyteller (even have a master’s degree in it from East TN State University) and I believe sharing my story and the stories of other creative people is what I can do in my lifetime. I aspire to be someone like Studs Terkel and Eve Ensler's brain child wrapped up in my own quirky little mind and body.

My dream is to connect creative people with each other through a network so that we’re never alone -- because many of us have been treated like second or third-class citizens because we’re not the MBAs of the Regan-era. In my quest to learn the stories of creative women, I’ve used all my savings and cashed in my small 401k to have a website built and launch my business. I’ve interviewed over 75 creative women around the US and Canada via the phone to ask them about their creative path in hopes they will become support for each other and anyone else who wants to live a similar life. I’ve posted many of their stories and advice via a blog that speaks of them and their work and also gives tips for trying to pay the bills when you’re a creative person. I’ve even created a one-woman show I call “Shout: Kiss My Art” based upon their tales and my own struggles to live my dream. The show received a small grant from the Metropolitan Arts Council of Greenville, SC, to help pay back a fraction of what I’ve put into it and I feel more optimistic that others can see the benefit of my vision and learning each others’ stories. In Summer 2009 I plan to interview 75 (or more) creative men and do the same work to reach out to the rest of the world with them.

Although Votre Vray, meaning ‘your truth’ is my business name, I am not writing this because I want you do buy anything, send money or ask others to throw money my way. I really am writing because I would love to have you as part of my network of people who believe we can all live our dreams if we all work together and support each other. If you go to Facebook and look up Votre Vray you’ll see my name and some of the casual friends I’ve made in life and in my new work. I thought if you joined us, maybe other creative people you respect might join us as well, and perhaps the ball will get rolling. Once you join, you can post links to your creative work for free, as long as you are kind, courteous, professional and do not discriminate or harass others in any form.

If you want all people (regardless of age, race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, body type, religion, political affiliation, etc.) to be able to live their dreams without feeling less-than or alone because they're creative and unique individuals, please join Votre Vray group. Tell everyone you know and respect about my vision and ask them to join us too. Help me leave a positive legacy and help each other by learning each others’ stories and holding on to each others' dreams.

Fortune's Smile

John Dryden, poet, literary critic and playwright said,
"Fortune befriends the bold."

I say, "Those who show up, and keep showing up, get the gig." It is almost a certainty that you will not be star material when you begin your journey of following your truth, but if you do the work, and keep at it, regardless of critics, one day, you'll get the gig of your dreams. The odds are in your favor. Those who do not have the conviction of their dreams give up and people who are in a position to select you and your work will do so if they continually hear of your efforts. One way to hear of your efforts is by telling them. Sounds simple but most creative folks seems shy about sharing their successes.

The other day I sent out the monthly Votre Vray newsletter and the key question I asked was what issues keep the recipients up at night. The number one response was marketing and an interesting note upon that is many artists stated they felt they didn't have a budget to do it at all and wanted to barter with marketing professionals to receive help with promotion of their work.

What should marketing cost?
That depends upon how much you value the service. One of the coaches I interviewed charges $5000 for 90 days of one-on-one assistance to bring an artist into global notice. If you told a CEO of a business company that was your fee they'd laugh because it is too low for what their market realizes is an essential step. However, when artists hear the figure they hang their heads, say, "I cannot afford that," and give up. Why? Because they don't value the service and haven't learned to look at the possible ROI (Return on Investment) for the money.

Guerrilla Marketing (or What can you do with little to no budget?)
  • Get magnetic signs for your vehicle that promote your art
  • Hang a banner that promotes your show or event.
  • Give away T-shirts or gift bags that promote your work.
  • Align yourself with someone more high-profile who will talk about you and your work.
  • Join a networking organization.
  • Print post cards of your work -- much like a business card -- and send them to people you wish were buying from you as an introduction.
  • Do what Ariel Gore, author of Become a Famous Writer Before You're Dead, did when she found out an out-of-town event had not promoted her appearance: stand on a street corner in a gorilla mask with a sign waving at people the day of your show!
  • Show up at open mics, mixers and other social events and meet the person in charge. Tell them who you are, what you do and ASK, "What can I do to help promote your work?" If people know you're willing to be a team player, you may wind up with a new promoter via good karma.
These are just the beginnings. The possibilities are endless. If you haven't read Gore's book (listed above), do so. Also read, Self-Promotion for the Creative Person by Lee Silber (who incidentally has a fantastic website that you can't afford NOT to browse and learn from). Then there are PR heroes who can help, like Peter Shankman, author of Can We Do That? and founder of Help a Reporter Out. (If you don't know HARO, the world doesn't know you -- and you probably weren't interviewed for Votre Vray Creative Women either. Seriously, Peter rocks!)

What does Mel do?
Well, more marketing, PR and networking that I do creating, until I have all my ducks in a row. Here are my top ten items that I do on a regular (daily or weekly) basis:
  1. My primary business focus is helping others follow their dreams (because in doing so, I get to follow mine and make good karma).
  2. I have several websites and this blog that are updated regularly because each update is one more thing someone who Googles my name will find out about my work and the work of those I aim to help.
  3. I am a member of several social media groups including Help a Reporter Out and I answer my own e-mail daily.
  4. I have a e-newsletter that goes out to friends of Votre Vray each month and always ask those I meet if I can add them to my newsletter list.
  5. I am a member of a local networking group and am always learning what they do to promote themselves, then coming home and implementing what I can from what they taught me.
  6. I am associated with other local high profile organizations including the Metropolitan Arts Council and the yW Empowerment Center, both who are supporting Shout: Kiss My Art! and are willing to e-mail, write and promote our co-ventures for free.
  7. I ask everyone I speak with, "Who do you know who can benefit from what I do because I really want to help promote living the creative life?"
  8. I give away T-shirts and gift bags in conjunction with other creative people who are marketing their services.
  9. I ask questions like, "May I promote your work for free on my blog?" and then do it.
  10. I am planning at least six to eight months in advance what my project deadlines are and share these with those who can most benefit from those details.
In other words, I don't create my art 40 hours a week and spend one marketing. One artist told me it should be at least a 60/40 split, with the higher concentration on marketing until you're reached your goals.

I will continue writing about marketing in future weeks, but until then, I've got some networking to do of my own.

Until then, keep creating!
-Mel.

Upstate Women's Show Reflections

Are you an artist that is thinking of being in a weekend show somewhere?

Do you have any idea what the traffic pattern for the event will be like?

What sort of giveaways will you have?

What is your main purpose in going -- sales? recognition? launch a new project?

All of these questions and more should come to mind when exhibiting as a vendor. The Upstate Women's Show in Greenville, SC, had a few challenges. First, all the spa/beauty/baubles items were on the right side of the venue. For some reason, they put me on the left side, next to the YWCA, and across from two home improvement companies. I had no choice in this, but did the best I could seeing I was the only creative girl on the block.

What I got out of the show: Recognition for Votre Vray and Shout: Kiss My Art, and several new artists who filled out questionnaires for the Creative Women project book.
What I would have liked more of: Sales.

Will I attend again next year? Perhaps, if they make some changes and let me exhibit near other creative folks, and if I have a new Votre Vray project ready.

All in all, I met some great people, gained a new friend or two amongst the other business owners, and learned how to best meet a non-creative crowd in future events.

Until next time,
keep creating!
-Mel.

Remembering Artists Hit by Floods from Levee Breaks and Katrina

It has been three years since Katrina ravaged the south and the weakness of the levees became a nightmare for those in New Orleans. Votre Vray artist Rachelle Matherne, of www.greenkangaroo.com, lost much to flooding. Still, when the flooding hit the mid-west this year she was certain to do what she could knowing the experience all too well. Rachelle told Mel Edwards' Votre Vray that some sent her basic art supplies though various organizations. She could have received more, including funds, but she had not been in business long enough.

With this post, I've included a link about how the Getty Foundation is helping the world of arts post-Katrina. Knowing most of us do not have these same resources to help, perhaps you should buy a little something from Rachelle, or any other artist you know in the area. (See www.neworleanscraftmafia.com for ideas.) The struggle isn't over yet, as the road is long indeed.

47 Links to Creative Women and Growing!

If you haven't noticed, down the right hand side of this blog are web addresses. All 47 of these links belong to Votre Vray Creative Women who have been part of the interview process and have shared their story with me, Mel. Edwards, so that I can pass on the word to all of you, dear readers.
Please visit these sites. Learn from each other. E-mail them and tell them you saw their site listed here. If you're also a Votre Vray Creative Woman, send them a message to introduce yourself. You may just find a new best friend in art!
Until next time,
keep creating!

More Amazing Women You Should Know

Wowee! What a ride this Votre Vray Creative Women project has been! Every day I've met several women who have the power to change the world with their verve, spunk and drive to be their truest selves, following their authentic path of passion to create a life they love living.

Here are some great ladies I've met and you should get to know today:

Sian (pronounced Shee-ahn) Lindeman, Creativity Coach and creator by her own right as well. What do you think it would cost to build an internationally known, money marking, artistic career from scratch? $100K? $1M? Think again. Sian can get your career on the launch pad with three months of intensive work at a mere $5,000! Try getting anyone to devote three months to your business for less! Visit www.siandesign.com for more information.

Ever dream of "the good old days" and want to return to your roots? You should meet Rosalea Hostetler, founder of the Prairie Connection and the Balmer Fund to preserve the prairies. She's fiesty, outspoken (just search for her on YouTube!) and controversial as she aims to put an end to "good ole boy" networks and "bullying on the prairies." Visit her website: www.prairieconnect.com to see her Liar's Pavillion and what the ruckus is all about.

Does music inspire your soul? Look no further than Judy Rodman, singer, songwriter, and powerhouse behind Runaway Home ~ The Musical. Judy addresses the tough issues of being a runaway, the human needs of safety and connection, all while inspiring others through teaching and her own entertainment work. Visit JudyRodman.com to learn more about this lovely lady today.

Is paradise only something for the after-life? I don't think so, and if you meet Elin Pendleton, you'll agree. She lives on a nature preserve with a menagerie of dogs, cats, horses, and goats. With a mother who had her pilot's license in the 1930s it is no wonder Elin is such a vivacious gal. She made laugh when she said, "I'm no Van Gogh...thank G-d!" You may see her work and her blog by beginning at www.elinart.com.

More brief profiles will be up as I move through the week and prepare for the Upstate Women's Show, here in Greenville, SC. If you're in town, please do visit my booth!

Mel Edwards Featured On Internet Voices Radio

http://internetvoicesradio.com/Arch-ToniQuest.htm

What goes around comes around...at least that's what I believe.
Toni Quest (aka Screaming Woman) is one of the Votre Vray Creative Women, and also a host on Internet Voices Radio. August 11th Toni returned the favor by generously having me (Mel) on her show.
To listen to the 30 minute program, select the link at the top of this message. (If you're having trouble with the link, visit InternetVoicesRadio.com, and go to the archives of Toni Quest's interviews.)

Thank you, Toni, for being such a lovely host and thank you to Lillian Cauldwell, the woman behind Internet Voices Radio!
